The first step is to line up your approach. You’ll have to use your judgment here since how you line up your approach will depend on the wind current.
Take a moment to pay attention to the wind current before starting the first step of docking a boat.
The second step to dock a boat is to come in slow. You should never approach a dock any faster than you are willing to hit it.
The third step to dock a boat is to time your swing. When you are about a boat length away, swing the wheel hard to the side. This will make the stern go to the port and get you lined up parallel with the dock.
The last step is to finish the docking. You’ll want to roll the wheel back to port and put the engine in reverse. Once this is done you can reach out, grab a rope, and tie it up.
