At some point, everyone gets to deal with a clogged drain. Rather than calling the handyman, some off-the-shelf products will be able to pull off the job, therefore, saving time and money. In this video, Todd from Project Farm tests out some drain cleaner products to determine which ones work and which ones don’t.
He’ll be testing Clobber (sulfuric Acid), Lye (Sodium Hydroxide), Muriatic Acid, Drano, Liquid Plumr, Drain Sticks Roebic (Enzymes/Bacteria) against common drain blockages such as paper towels, solids, hair, grease, solids, and vegetables.
One key takeaway to note is that one should not pour just anything down the drain. Powerful acids such as sulfuric acid can corrode metals but leave plastic undamaged. Not only that, but strong acids and bases are hazardous to touch, and the fumes these chemicals release can have adverse effects on the body.
Lastly, septic tank systems may not be able to handle loads of chemical compounds being poured down the drain. These compounds may kill off the bacteria needed to break down solids. In any case, if done knowledgeably, anyone can have great success with drain cleaners.
